Easter revision
Academic
We have spent the last few years developing the innovative Brilliance Curriculum. From Years 7 to Upper Sixth we have consciously reordered and realigned the teaching of knowledge in each subject, focussing on identifying and highlighting the key building blocks to understanding. This is a deliberate move away from blindly following the order of topics in a textbook. The Brilliance Curriculum has been reverse engineered. Our starting point is a student studying each subject beyond Millfield, at university or in the workplace: We have built backwards so that our curriculum is carefully planned and crafted from Year 7, so that each topic builds on the knowledge and skills learnt previously, to deliver these goals and provide a much richer learning experience for students.
The Brilliance Curriculum
How does this help students?
By creating connections both within and between subjects, students will gain a much broader, deeper and richer understanding. Studying food waste and sustainability from a geographical point of view at the same time as in food studies gives the topic far greater resonance, connecting the recycling of plastics in product design to their production in chemistry can only enhance understanding. Studying protest songs in music will only deepen understanding of the civil rights movement when it is studied in history.
Greater Understanding
+
Each subject has created a Brilliance Curriculum map so that you can see where your learning will take you. Research in cognitive science tells us that the more connections that can be made, the more ingrained knowledge becomes and students develop greater confidence using and applying that knowledge. The Brilliance Curriculum covers all the content required by the exam specifications but students learn that they will encounter different perspectives on the same topic in biology, geography or English and the artificial subject boundaries are removed. We want our students to be curious and we know this approach will develop this. No subject is an island on the Brilliance Curriculum – bridges between subjects are sought out and embraced. The beauty of the Brilliance Curriculum is that this approach will only improve exam performance.
Create your personalised programme around your subjects, sport and interests.

Small class sizes
We teach small class sizes which allows teachers to develop that important one-to-one connection, closely monitor each student’s learning and make sure they progress at a pace that is right for them.
We take every opportunity to ensure that students of all abilities are stretched through a range of academic enrichment opportunities. This even starts at Breakfast time with our Brilliance breakfast. In Sixth Form, students are encouraged and supported to complete an . This qualification is highly desired by top universities as it introduces the students to research skills and to sources of information and opinion that they might not ordinarily encounter in the course of their studies. The EPQ also allows them to develop a range of skills that will prepare them well for university life and to begin to explore a particular area of specialisation. consists of lectures and events hosted by academic departments. These are all designed to inspire curiosity and a spirit of enquiry by exposing students to material that is quite distinct from the taught curriculum. We support students in a large number of external competitions, including in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Linguistics and Informatics, the Intermediate and Senior Mathematics , the Millfield Maths Challenge, the Naval Engineering Challenge, the English Speaking Union Public Speaking competition, European Youth Parliament, Model United Nations, the Omnibus Translation Competition, and offered by Oxford and Cambridge colleges. We also run a rich programme of trips to to Oxford, Cambridge and other competitive universities starts the moment a student arrives at Millfield. Every aspect of our curriculum is designed to stretch and challenge and prepare them for the rigours of the process, with tailored support for each application.

Learning Support
Our Learning Support Centre (LSC) offers specialist support to students with specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia. Some students arrive at Millfield with additional educational needs (AEN) already identified, whilst others may become apparent through our thorough programme of screening and assessment. Programmes of support are offered in the LSC to assist students with AEN in their learning and to support reasonable adjustments, so that students can reach their potential. In all years, including Sixth Form, the LSC offers timetabled
Study Support alongside drop-in lunchtime workshops and other specialist provision. The LSC prides itself on creating a supportive environment where students thrive and are equipped with the necessary strategies to become independent learners. Millfield has partnered with Made by Dyslexia and Microsoft. Technology provides unparalleled support for those students with dyslexia. The use of assistive technology such as Microsoft’s Immersive Reader now enables students to access content which previously would not have been possible.
Digital Learning
We are proud of our extensive digital learning provision. All students and teachers have iPads and examples of innovative use of technology across the curriculum are plentiful. Sixth Form students may bring a laptop to school in addition to an iPad. We believe every lesson at Millfield should be an engaging, exciting and inspiring experience. We make the most of every opportunity to get students involved using the latest technology. To enrich learning, students use iPads in lessons and for further study. From providing access to source materials and artworks to electronic notebook records, the use of digital technology enhances engagement and independent learning, as well as preparing students for life in a digital world.

MBA
(Millfield Brilliance Award)
Millfield is a playground of intellectual, creative, cultural, community and sporting opportunity. Making the most of these opportunities requires ambition, confidence and commitment. The Millfield Brilliance Award (MBA) brings together these opportunities into a coherent programme that encourages, records and awards your involvement and achievement in activities within and beyond the school. It has been designed to help you to get the most from your Sixth Form experience, and in the process, send you on your way to all those even bigger and better things with a personal portfolio of transferable skills and achievements. It provides a framework for developing the characteristics and self-awareness that will enable you to maximise the enjoyment and fulfilment you gain from participation. All Sixth Formers participate in the 12 week programme during the Autumn Term of the Lower Sixth building upon skills in four different areas of their personal development whilst becoming more aware of their place in society.
Self:
Exploring the ways in which students can be the best they can be.
Wellbeing:
Helping students acquire a range of skills that will aid a smoother navigation of the world around them.
Leadership:
Focusing on the ways in which students can take a positive and active role in the world.
Global Awareness:
Introducing ways to put learning into practice e.g overseas expeditions, community projects, volunteering.
Events & Partnerships
A ‘fresher’s fair’ style event of charity activities, a clothes exchange, food tasting and live music to raise money for local charities. The event not only raises funds for charities but educates and endorses the negative connotations of fast fashion and encourages recycling.
Partnership with Nepal
Staff and students visit the Nepal every two years to volunteer at a school and support the community of Hangdewa. A number of staff and students also personally sponsor children out there.

Drama
Millfield Drama is about creativity, collaboration and communication, encouraging students to create, perform and understand the world of theatre. The Drama co-curricular programme offers training, performance, devising, playwriting and technical theatre projects for students of all abilities and experience. Curated by our full time Director in Residence, the programme aims to entertain, inform and challenge through an annual schedule of relevant, engaging and high-quality theatre under the umbrella of the Meyer Theatre Company. The performance calendar ranges from small ‘Tea and Drama’ events to full length productions, both scripted and devised. Recent productions include ‘A Monster Calls’ and ‘Blue Stockings’, hosted in our spectacular 400 seater Meyer Theatre. For students aspiring to study drama, we regularly host speakers, workshops and theatre visits and host Q&A sessions from producers, writers and actors as well as workshops with theatre practitioners. Students have successfully auditioned for the National Youth Theatre, and have recently gained places at Urdang, London Studio Centre, Guildford School of Acting and on top University courses in the UK and USA.

From contemporary dance to commercial, ballet and street dance to modern, dance at Millfield is thriving. With three dance companies, plus a vocational pathway group, we are able to support specialist dancers, whilst our general programme develops fitness, expression and engagement for those students wishing to develop their dance skills in a dynamic, supportive environment. We offer over 35 dance classes throughout the week, open to students of all abilities as part of their games and co-curricular programme. Boarding and Day
Whether boarding or day, all students benefit from the warm, positive atmosphere of their house. It’s this supportive environment that helps to create such a strong community spirit throughout the school. Millfield’s boarders are all full boarders unlike so many schools these days and it is central to our community ethos. Our school is full of students on weekends.
Our boarding and day houses are at the centre of our students’ school lives.
Houses are led by Housemasters/Housemistresses (HsMs) and supported by assistants, boarding house managers and tutors. While houses differ in size and location, they are all committed to delivering the same proactive and compassionate pastoral care. Millfield’s HsMs are all experienced academic members of staff with a desire to help young people achieve their potential. They live in the house, in many instances with their own family and pets.
Health And Wellbeing
Healthy meals are provided three times a day in our dining hall, where our excellent catering team creates varied menus to suit all tastes, backgrounds and cultures. Students can also enjoy healthy snacks in house. In addition to physical health, the wellbeing of students is at the heart of everything we do at Millfield, and our Medical Centre, counselling service and spiritual support provide physical and emotional support to all who need it.
HsMs are often students’ first port of call whenever they have a problem. They work together to support students through the challenges of teenage life, helping them develop their own strategies to negotiate the difficulties of growing up. The pastoral care offered by all members of the house team, together with that from school counsellors, sports coaches, instrumental teachers and academic tutors, is complemented by the formal teaching students receive in their PSHEE lessons. Spiritual support is available to all members of the school, irrespective of faith, should they need someone to talk to. Tolerance and exploration of faith and spirituality is central to our teaching, not just in the weekly services in the chapel, but across the whole school.
House Spirit
House staff work to provide a modern but homely environment in the houses, which are designed to encourage communal living yet retain privacy. Superfast Wi-Fi networks ensure the school is a connected community, allowing students to learn, work and collaborate with each other, as well as contact their families easily. But what truly makes a house is the people within. The loyalty that each student feels towards their house – whether in day-to-day life or in sporting competitions – has always been one of Millfield’s greatest strengths.
Evenings and Weekends
Millfield has a thriving boarding programme throughout the academic year. Once prep (homework) has been completed, those who wish to join in with leisure pursuits can use the world-class Millfield facilities for activities including swimming, fitness and dodgeball. At weekends there are house trips, including:
Art galleries
Cinemas
Museums
Theatres
Shopping
Rock climbing
Beach trips
Day students may stay for supper after lessons, games or whichever activity they may be involved in. All students can use the library for prep and private study until 8.45pm. There are lessons on Saturday mornings and many will be involved in sports fixtures in the afternoon.
Visiting Home
Boarders are allowed four exeat weekends in the autumn term (including a fixed exeat weekend where all boarders go home) and three in the spring and summer terms. These are organised in cooperation with house staff, with students required to leave after games on a Saturday afternoon and return by 10pm on Sunday. Many boarders also see their families on Sundays throughout the academic year, and we welcome parents at school matches, arts performances and other school events.
Millfield has approximately 1330 students between the ages of 13 and 18. The main points of entry are at Year 9 (approximately 200 places) and Lower Sixth (approximately 150 places). There are also spaces for approximately 60 students to join in Year 10. Our selection process is designed to identify students who are able to benefit from our balanced and well-rounded education and to make a positive contribution towards the life of the school. We are looking for well-motivated boys and girls with a genuine interest in education in the broadest sense of the word, and interests that stretch beyond the academic curriculum.
Applying and Fees
Open Days are held three times a year in February/March, May and October. The morning includes a welcome by the Headmaster and tours around the campus, lunch and an opportunity to meet staff. Throughout the afternoon, you are welcome to watch any games, matches or activities at your leisure. Personal visits are individual school tours principally during term time, but may be possible during holiday periods too. The tour will be hosted by a current student lasting around one hour, and there will be an opportunity to meet with the admissions team. Book for open day in the menu bar.

By completing a Registration Form, you are showing a firm expression of interest and this is the first step towards securing a place at Millfield. Once we have received a completed Registration Form and fee, we will write for a reference from your son or daughter’s current school at the end of Year 11. You can register online via our website in the menu bar.
Register for a place
After receiving a reference from your son or daughter’s school, we will contact you to arrange a time for your child to attend for interview and assessment. 16+ Entry Entry is dependent upon performance in an interview, satisfactory reference from the current school (to include GCSE/IGCSE/BTEC predicted grades for UK based candidates) and a verbal and non-verbal assessment. Places on a full A level programme are offered after interview, subject to achieving Millfield’s grade requirements which are available in the Sixth Form Courses brochure on the website.
Interview and assessment
The offer of a place will be sent out on or after the 1 December in the year preceding entry. For scholarship candidates this is around two to three weeks after the assessment.

Scholarships and bursaries
Scholarships are awarded to students on entry at Lower Sixth. Academic, art, chess, dance, drama, music, product design and sport scholarships are offered to candidates who are exceptionally talented in any one of these disciplines.
Scholarship assessments are held in the academic year preceding entry and are open to students who have an excellent school reference. All scholarships may be honorary or carry a nominal fee reduction of up to 10% of fees. If a scholarship has been applied for, parents in genuine financial need can also apply for a means-tested bursary. Sixth Form Scholarships are available for students who are in Year 11 at their existing schools. The closing date for Millfield Scholarship applications for Sixth Form is early October in the preceding year of entry. Full details about our scholarships and bursaries, and deadline dates can be found on our school website: millfieldschool.com/scholarships
Bursaries
Bursaries may be available for entry into Millfield in cases where a pupil does not meet the requirements for a scholarship and where there is a genuine financial need. Details regarding bursary applications are available on request from the Admissions Department. Any bursary award will be based on the available resources and the financial situation of parents; bursarial awards are reviewed annually.
